How to apply for government jobs on the Ajira Portal

What the Ajira Portal is

Most public service vacancies in Tanzania are advertised and processed by the Public Service Recruitment Secretariat (PSRS). Applications are made online through the Ajira Portal at portal.ajira.go.tz, not by post or by hand. When a Daraja listing comes from a government employer, the Apply button takes you to the official Ajira sign-in or vacancy page.

You create one profile on the portal and reuse it for every application, so the time you spend completing it carefully pays off many times.

Before you register

Prepare clear scans or photos (PDF is safest) of:

• Your NIDA number. The portal uses it to confirm your identity.
• Academic certificates and transcripts: Form Four and Form Six certificates, plus diploma or degree certificates where you have them.
• Your birth certificate.
• Professional registration certificates if the job needs them (for example nursing, engineering or accountancy boards).
• A recent passport-size photo and an email address you check every day.

Complete your profile fully

• Register with your email, confirm the account and sign in.
• Fill in personal details exactly as they appear on your certificates. Name differences are a common reason for rejection.
• Add every education level, upload the matching certificate and enter your results.
• Add work experience with dates, employer names and your main duties.
• Add referees who can be contacted, with working phone numbers and emails.
• Upload a signed application letter when the vacancy asks for one.

Applying for a vacancy

Open the vacancy, read the qualifications line by line and apply only when you meet the minimum requirements. Applications usually close at the stated deadline, and the portal can become slow on the last day, so submit early.

Shortlisted candidates are announced through the PSRS website and the portal, normally with the interview date, venue and the documents to bring. Check your portal account and email regularly after applying.

Common mistakes

• Uploading blurred, cropped or unreadable certificates.
• Applying for posts where you do not meet the stated qualification.
• Leaving the profile incomplete or using an email you no longer check.
• Paying anyone who promises to secure a government job. Government recruitment is free.
