Keep it short and clear
Recruiters often screen dozens or hundreds of CVs for one post. A clear two-page CV is easier to read than a long document listing everything you have done. Graduates can usually fit everything on one or two pages; experienced professionals rarely need more than three.
A structure that works
- Contact details: full name, phone number, professional email and town. Your full home address, religion, tribe and marital status are not needed.
- Profile: three or four lines on who you are, your main skills and the kind of role you want.
- Work experience: newest job first, with employer, title, dates and three to five achievements.
- Education: highest qualification first, with the institution and year.
- Skills: computer, language and technical skills that relate to the job.
- Referees: two or three people who have supervised or taught you, or a line saying referees are available on request.
Write achievements, not only duties
Compare "Responsible for customer accounts" with "Managed 120 customer accounts and reduced overdue payments by 30% in one year". The second shows what you achieved. Use numbers where you honestly can: customers served, reports produced, money saved, people trained.
Tailor every application
Read the job advert and make sure the words that matter appear in your CV when they are true for you. If the advert asks for experience with QuickBooks, donor reporting or mobile money reconciliation, say clearly where you did it. One general CV sent everywhere is easy to reject.
Final checks
- Save and send as PDF, named clearly, for example Asha-Mussa-CV.pdf.
- Check spelling, dates and phone numbers twice.
- Use one simple font and avoid photos unless the employer asks for one.
- Never add qualifications or experience you do not have; employers verify certificates.
Common CV mistakes in Tanzania
- Starting with a long list of personal details instead of your skills and experience.
- Listing primary school results and every short seminar instead of the qualifications that matter for the job.
- Using the same CV for an accountant post and a sales post.
- Unexplained gaps. If you spent a year volunteering, studying or running a small business, say so.
