Practical ways to build skills, credentials and networks for your next role while working in Tanzania.

Treat your current job as evidence

Your next employer will ask what you achieved, not only what you were responsible for. Keep a private record of results, projects and feedback every month. It makes updating your CV and preparing for interviews much easier.

Invest in recognised credentials

In many fields, professional qualifications and registration open doors to senior roles: accountancy, procurement, engineering, nursing, law and human resources all have professional bodies in Tanzania. Short certificates in project management, data analysis or digital skills can also strengthen your profile.

Build a professional network

  • Stay in touch with former classmates, supervisors and colleagues.
  • Attend professional association events and industry forums.
  • Keep a complete, honest LinkedIn profile.
  • Help others: share vacancies and give useful feedback.

Move with care

Apply quietly, avoid using your employer's equipment or time for job hunting, and give the notice period in your contract when you resign. Leaving professionally protects your references.

Ask for development at work

Use performance reviews to agree on training, new responsibilities or projects that build the skills your next role will need. Volunteering for cross-team work, mentoring new staff or leading a small improvement project gives you strong examples for future interviews. Many employers also support professional examinations or short courses when you can show how they benefit the organisation.

Plan your next step

Look at adverts for the role you want in two or three years and compare the requirements with your current profile. The gaps, whether a qualification, a type of experience or a management responsibility, become your development plan. Review it every six months and update your CV as you close each gap.

Keep your documents and profile current

Update your CV every few months while your achievements are fresh, keep new certificates scanned and filed, and refresh your Ajira Portal or other recruitment profiles if you plan to apply for public service roles. When the right opportunity appears, you can apply within a day instead of rebuilding everything under pressure. Daraja job alerts and the WhatsApp channel can help you see relevant openings early.
